Only military MREs come with an accessory pack that contains toilet paper, matches, flavorings, and other survival necessities. MREs don't expire, although the manufacturers advise that, when kept at room temperature, the meal components should last for at least five years. MREs have a date for inspection and a date for when it was packed. The Military inspects the cases during long-term storage to ensure they are still fit for consumption on the Inspection date, which is three years after the Pack date.
